It’s been a while since I’ve updated you on what’s going on and it’s perfect timing because there is a new style of event that is like no other. If you follow social media and platforms like Well & Good, Mind Body Green, Buzz Feed or Summit, you may recognise this concept (if you don’t, welcome to your new and exciting morning routine): Morning Raves! Before you get ahead of yourself, and of me, fear not: this post does not involve promoting drugs, alcohol and sleepless nights. In fact, it’s basically the complete opposite.
Morning Raves (Day Breakers is one of the best known versions) are a new concept that was introduced in some of the top metropolitan cities around the world (think: London, New York, LA, Berlin, Dubai) as a result of the increasing popularity of holistic living. That’s right: healthy living is in. The new concept basically takes all of the great parts of a rave (dancing, music, fun, exercise, movement, friendship, colour, art, food) and removes the things that aren’t so safe and certainly don’t leave you feeling wonderful the next day.
Let’s paint this picture shall we: early morning, yoga, meditation, music, dancing, holistic food and treats, coffee, green juice, holistic shots (wheatgrass, turmeric, ginger), art, hooping, aerial aerobics, acroyoga, massages, and more! Who’s not in?
My first experience with a morning rave was actually in Dubai at Sunrise Nation just a few weeks after moving there in 2013. The company that I was working with (sending love to you Essentially Dubai) was sponsoring the event and supplying all the morning party-goers with cold-pressed juice for days. This was the first time I had heard of such an event and was jumping to attend. What I experienced was pretty crazy- 5am wake-up, lots of green juice, coffee, almond butter balls, dancing and many photos. I was hooked.
It’s no surprise that when I returned to Vancouver and was offered a complimentary ticket to an event that sounded awfully like a morning rave, I jumped (literally, for hours). The event was called The Synergy Session and I had been one of the lucky ones chosen on Instagram to win a ticket AND a lulu lemon yoga mat (which is now my favourite one). That morning I enjoyed a beautiful meditation, some really fun and interesting partner yoga that seriously got me out of my head and a little bit of dance and play (not as much as the Dubai morning rave, but hey, there are different styles). The thing that really set The Synergy Session apart from the rest was the food. Founded by Hillary Mastrodicasa, yoga teacher and beautiful soul- this morning rave is one like no other in that it has it’s roots in the holistic importance of food and where it’s come from.
Mastrodicasa is super passionate about local, organic farmers and works hard to support them in the community. Her bond with a particular organic farmer is illustrated by the fact that she worked on the farm for some time and still helps out at the Trout Lake farmers market here in Vancouver.
Being a foodie and holistic nutritionist- I had to see this for myself. So, one beautiful Saturday morning, my husband and I piled into the jeep and made our way to Trout Lake farmers market to meet the farmer who Hillary supports so strongly. It was there that we met Kevin, the co-founder of Klippers Organics, a farm that is located in the Similkameen Valley of British Columbia.
The farm, which started in 2001 as a 5 acre lot, is now 40 acres and abundant in local and organic produce. From garlic scapes, to apples, to all of your favourite greens- there is some major love for mother nature in their presence. For me, when it comes to brands and businesses it truly is about who is behind the name and Kevin is a wonderful example of passion, commitment, drive and a very strong foundational why.
It’s a huge benefit when you know that you’ll be attending an event and can trust that the food is local, sustainably produced, mindfully harvested and comes from a place of love (also plant-based, gluten-free, organic). That is major synergy!
